The Yampa River is the last wild river in the Colorado River system - free flowing and undammed. Primarily fed by spring runoff, the river really cranks in May and June with class III and IV whitewater. Running through Dinosaur National Monument, the multiple-day trip delights visitors with rich wildlife, beautiful camps and great side hikes. The Yampa joins the Green river at Echo Park, a significant archaeological site for the Freemont Culture: semi-nomadic ancestral Puebloan people who lived in the area over 1000 years ago. Long a favorite with river runners, the Yampa offers a unique geological look back in time. The limestones and shales, of the canyon give way to the more predominant sandstone features such as the 1,000' high "Grand Overhang" and the striped "Tiger Wall." At Echo Park, the Mitten Park Fault and the billion-year-old Uinta Mountain Group formation are really impressive. This wonderful wilderness trip should be high on the list for any rafting enthusiast.
